LA GOMERA: GENERAL INFORMATION

La Gomera, general information

How to enter La Gomera.
La Gomera belongs to the Canary Islands archipelago, which therefore falls within the European Union area: there are no barriers for EU citizens.

Language.
The official language is Spanish. English, like German, is quite widely spoken.

Currency and exchange.
The official currency is the euro. Credit cards almost always work at ATMs and commercial establishments. Before leaving, always ask your bank about the withdrawal conditions and daily limits of your cards abroad.

Getting to La Gomera.
We arrived in La Gomera by taking a flight from Milan Malpensa with the Wizz Air company, which schedules flights to Tenerife several times a day in winter.

In Tenerife you need to go to Los Cristianos and board a ferry to La Gomera.

The island also has a small airport in Playa Santiago.

Bear in mind that a Milan-Tenerife flight takes 4 hours.

Internal Travel.
The island has an active bus service that connects all the most important towns, but to get around easily it is best to rent a car.

Safety.
The island is very safe, with practically no crime.

Eating.
The island's gastronomy offers tourists typical flavors of Spanish countries, such as pimento de Padron, Patanegra ham, pulpo a la gallega and papas arrugadas, but without any doubt, Gomera cuisine is characterized by the two main foods that will take you to another dimension of taste: palm honey and almogrote.

  • Palm honey

Palm honey is a kind of sweet syrup, obtained by cooking palm sap, which is extracted from the heart of the plant. This “honey” excellently accompanies sweet and savory dishes.

  • Almogrote

  • It is the culinary jewel of La Gomera, and is composed of a mixture of goat's cheese, chilli pepper and olive oil which is spread like a pâté. Attention! It can cause such a strong addiction that you can no longer do without it!

Accomodation.
We stayed in San Sebastian, a strategic position for the port, for renting a car, for the good choice of accommodation facilities and restaurants.

Valle Gran Rey is another place to consider.

Climate.
In winter, La Gomera has a fantastic climate: temperatures that rarely fall below 17 degrees and above 25.

In the central area of the island, where the Garajonay National Park is located, temperatures are lower, and the possibility of encountering rain and fog is high.

What to pack.
Late spring and summer clothes, sunscreen, and don't forget your swimsuit.

For excursions you need trekking clothing, with waterproof shoes and shell.

Power outlets.
The electrical current is 230V, while the electrical frequency is 50 HZ AC. The electrical sockets are type C and type F, the same as the Italian one. Useful link to power sockets

Telephone / internet coverage.
The island belongs to Spain and therefore to the European Union, so the tariff plan when roaming is activated will be the same as in the home country, if EU.
