Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, between Walser and resistance
Nestled between the mountains in north-eastern Piedmont, this large area has throughout history been a hostile, almost inhospitable land due to its rugged and vertiginous relief, a place for many inaccessible, reserved for toil and sweat for a piece of bread.
In these places where the Swiss confederate states and the Duchy of Milan once fought, one of the bloodiest episodes of all the Italian resistance took place, which would have contributed decisively to the unstoppable mountain depopulation and to the future establishment of the national park more wilderness of Europe, the Val Grande National Park.
In the following articles we will try to talk about the pills of this paradise and the valleys that extend from Monte Rosa to Lake Maggiore.
They are lands rich in testimonies left by the Walser, an ancient population of Germanic origin who in the past settled in the mountain altitudes still untouched by man, where pristine forests and green pastures extended (and still extend) as far as the eye could see.
