MYANMAR: GENERAL INFORMATION
Myanmar, general information
How to enter Myanmar.
To enter the country, it is necessary to apply for a tourist visa.
Given the uncertain political situation underway (coup of the military regime at the beginning of 2021), it is not recommended to travel to the country except for necessary reasons.
Language.
The official language is Burmese, a language of Sino-Tibetan origin.
English outside Yangon and the tourist Bagan is almost unknown, for this reason a local English-speaking guide is required to move within the country.
Currency and exchange.
The official currency is the Burmese Kyat, with an exchange rate of around 2300K = 1€ (in 2023). Credit and debit cards are difficult to use except in the most touristic areas: for this reason it is important to be sufficiently equipped with dollars and local currency.
Getting to Myanmar.
International flights to Myanmar will land in Yangon, the country's main city (even if it’s not the capital anymore). I think there are still no direct flights from Italy, and therefore there is at least one stopover to make (we flew with Qatar Airways in 2018, having a stop in Doha).
From Europe, consider that a trip evaluated short lasts 14-16h total.
Internal Travel.
To visit the country, we relied on a local guide, who planned all the logistics for us after we communicated the sites we were interested in visiting.
We used more than one car with a private taxi driver and the following internal flights:Yangon - Mandalay, Mandalay - Heho, Heho - Bagan, and finally we returned to Yangon by car.
Safety.
During our visit, the country seemed quite safe to us, although some military checkpoints could be a little scary. Net of the coup and the subsequent establishment of a military government (2021), we fear that the current situation in the country is unsafe for a trip.
Eating.
Burmese food is Asian style: chicken and vegetables will always be accompanied by Basmati rice (Myanmar is one of the largest producing countries in the world, where rice is still grown and harvested in the traditional way).
The local food is very good and genuine, but when you ask for a dish remember not to spice it further as otherwise it would become tremendously spicy!
Absolutely try the tasty tea leaf salad and fruit, always fresh and in season (we still remember an exquisite coconut bought near the U-Bein bridge!) in the most touristic places like Bagan.
Accomodation.
We were satisfied with all the hotels selected during our stay, and found the quality standards almost comparable to Western levels. Bagan reserves the possibility of staying in the most luxurious hotels, with prices higher than the local average, but always a little lower than European standards.
Climate.
The climate is tropical with two seasons present, one dry and one hit by the monsoon. We visited the country during the dry season, which corresponds more or less to the winter period.
What to pack.
For our adventure trip, we packed summer clothes (with a sweatshirt for the airport) and our indispensable camera. Also bring sunscreen and a hat if you plan to go outside a lot.
Power outlets.
The electric current in Myanmar is 230V, while the electric frequency is 50 HZ AC. The electrical sockets are type C, type F (the same as the Italian one), and type G, with an additional pole in the center, of British derivation. Bringing an adapter is good and enjoyable.
Useful link power sockets.
Telephone / internet coverage.
Due to the very high tariff cost of our telephone operator, we did not use roaming, and we relied on the wi-fi connections of the hotels chosen for the stay. We believe that internet coverage is usable in the main tourist cities.
