Useful Info:
The route is to be avoided in the summer season due to excessive heat, because there are few shady areas as the landscape is mostly made up of grasslands and barren areas.
Attention! Due to the length of the path, we recommend that you only follow it in its entirety if you have trained legs. It is important to have an adequate supply of water with you.
If the day is sunny, bring a hat and sunscreen.
Today we want to offer you a particular circular tour: a long crossing of the Capanne di Marcarolo park which starts at the parking lot near the Rio Gorzente hut, in the area of the Nespolo bridge. At this point, the Gorzente is made up of beautiful meanders of crystalline emerald green water, and is a popular destination to find some refreshment during the summer.
Behind the hut-restaurant (we recommend going there to listen to good rock music), starts the road that quickly reaches the Nespolo farmhouse and its wonderful centuries-old chestnut trees.
Continuing the route, the path leaves the wood and the vegetation becomes more sparse and shrubby, especially when it runs along the southern base of Mount Tobbio. This leads to the Dagliola pass, the crossroads of many hiking trails.
Instead of turning towards the Tobbio, we left for the Carrosina house, perhaps abandoned after a failed attempt to restore it. The farmhouse is surrounded by meadows full of narcissus blooms, from which you can enjoy the surrounding landscape.
The very wide path continues behind the farmhouse, in a very barren and poor in vegetation area, and begins to climb towards Mount Figne, becoming steeper in the final stretch.
The worst is over: now a large flat stretch takes us to the Perseghin meadow, where the way to go is the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, which starts from Sanremo and arrives in La Spezia.
From the meadow we walked a few hundred meters before turning right and reaching Bric Nasciu, the most beautiful viewpoint in our opinion of the whole natural park, where the view of the Gorzente lakes is unparalleled.
Here we recommend having a meal, before leaving for the cippus of Passo Mezzano, where some partisans who escaped the massacre of the Benedicta were shot. The path clears up and descends, between rocks and vegetation that is more Mediterranean than Apennine, until it reaches the level of the artificial reservoir of Lake Lungo, near the caretaker's house.
At this point we skirted the lake to the north and arrived at Lake Bruno, where we followed the carriage road that leads to the dam.
Once you have passed the dam, you must follow the path that passes behind a second barrier, used for the overflow (carefully evaluate the crossing when passing this point, especially after heavy rains!)
Now all that remains is to skirt the Gorzente stream and its pools of crystalline water which in about an hour and a half would have brought us back to the starting point, making us close the exhausting but satisfying ring.
