Useful info:
The route is slightly sloping except for the final part where you go up to the Tobbio, which is a bit more demanding. Avoid this trek in the summer because of the heat, while it is recommended in winter, when the Tobbio is covered in snow.
Mount Tobbio is certainly the best-known peak in the whole Ovadese area, recognizable both for its prominent aspect and for its northernmost position compared to the other peaks belonging to the Capanne di Marcarolo natural park, once a crossroads of trade routes between the lower Piedmont and Genoa.
From its summit, on which the characteristic church dedicated to Our Lady of Caravaggio was built in 1897, the view on clear days is superb, an ideal balcony for seeing the sea on one side and the Alps on the other.
The fastest way to reach the top of Tobbio is to follow the path that starts from the very popular Valico degli Eremiti. We opted for the departure from Voltaggio, less traveled, to lengthen the route and spend more time in the silence of nature.
The path starts from the town square (follow the full yellow triangle), taking the staircase on the right that leads to an esplanade with the ruins of a castle and a gymnastic path with wooden equipment.
We then continued on the north side of the Bric Brughe, turning left into a chestnut wood where some mushrooms peeped out of the undergrowth.
After a few hundred meters the wood gives way to a sparser vegetation, mostly composed of shrubs and conifers, until you reach the Dagliola pass, the watershed saddle between the valley crossed by the Lavezze river and that of the Gorzente stream, as well as important point where many paths of the Capanne di Marcarolo park cross.
Here the landscape is much more open and rockier, and the last conifers leave the baton to shrubs and flowers of the Mediterranean bush such as thyme and heather.
From this point the Tobbio is unmistakable, a giant that rises majestically towards the sky and on which grow folded pines that resist the wind, the rigidity of the winter climate and the heat of the summer temperature.
The effort spent to get to its top along the direct route was rewarded by a view that took our breath away: the shining sea looking south, the Po valley and the Alps to the north; and above, the blue of the sky.
