Land in sight!

The arrival in Labuan Bajo after an unforgettable experience of several days on a boat marked the beginning of our latest adventure, namely the exploration of Flores.

For this last part of our trip, which lasted 8 days, we always turned to the same Komodo boat rental agency to ask for a private driver (it would have been very difficult to get around on this island where no English is spoken at all); the agency would have put at our complete disposal the very cordial Fred and his car, which would have covered hundreds of kilometers, making us stop in the most characteristic places (all studied months before).

Island description

Flores is an Indonesian island belonging to the Lesser Sunda Islands, with an area of approximately 14,300 km² and a population of approximately 1.5 million inhabitants.

The island was colonized by the Portuguese starting from the sixteenth century, but in the mid-1800s Portugal ceded it to Holland, keeping only nearby East Timor in the area.

For this reason, Flores, unlike much of Indonesia, professes a Catholic creed, and the island represents the border between the expansion of Catholicism in the Pacific and the beginning of the Islamized area of Asia.

A trip to this remote island is a unique, authentic experience, which will lead you to discover a people that preserves their traditions and rural rhythms intact, with towns immersed in rice fields, flanked by small and still intact tribal villages surrounded by a wild nature.

Here do not expect to find the services of cosmopolitan Bali: Flores, having not yet been touched by mass tourism, still retains its most authentic spirit, with related lacking services.
