THE FLOWERY ARCHIPELAGO OF LES SAINTS
The flowery archipelago of les Saintes
Guadeloupe is surrounded by some islands that can be easily reached by ferry in a few hours: to the east there are La Desirade and the very small Petite-Terre, while to the south there are the archipelago of Les Saints and Marie-Galante.
By informing ourselves on the web we have seen that each one has its own particularity and that all of them should be visited, but due to our limited time available we decided to visit the archipelago of Les Saints, precisely the island of Terre-de-Haut.
This small archipelago can be reached directly from the capital Pointe-à-Pitre, or from the small port of the small town of Trois Rivieres, in Basse-Terre. If, like us, you decide to start from the latter, you will save a lot of navigation time.
We refer you to the link of the shipping company that carry out the navigation.
Once we landed, we walked around the island, because all the local electric bike, scooter and golf car rental companies no longer had the means available. In order not to do like us and optimize your time spent on the island, we advise you to book your most suitable vehicle well in advance.
Here are some useful links for booking, retrieved from the web:
Take some time to visit Fort Napoleon for two reasons.
The first, for the wonderful view over the bay, welcome to Pirates of the Caribbean!
The second, for the story: Fort Napoleon tells of the battle of Les Saints, which took place in 1782 between the French and the British, the former with 33 ships and the latter with 36. The two sides met each other in close ranks, but for reasons still not well understood today, the French widened the formation, allowing the passage of some English vessels which sank some ships with cannon fire. The French, being too leeward, suffered heavy casualties and surrendered, setting aside dreams of conquest of the Caribbean.
In the fort there are some rooms that display objects and armaments of the time, while walking in the external garden will offer other very suggestive glimpses of the bay.
After lunch we headed to Pompierre beach, a place where sea turtles lay their eggs, but a sudden rain welcomed us after a short time: in order not to end up defeated like the French in the battle of Les Saints, we retreated to the small town.
If you are a flower lover you will not be disappointed: the island is dotted with hibiscus plants of all colors!
This is truly an island that deserves to be seen at least once in a lifetime, perhaps by spending a couple of days relaxing on the sand, away from everyday life.
