Useful information:

The paths are well marked and do not present any particular difficulties.

At malga Vallepiana there are sheepdogs who protect the herds and flocks. Walking on the road of the former quarry you will hear some warning barks: for your safety keep a safe distance (as a sign at the beginning of the route states).

In autumn you may encounter very rainy and cold days; for this reason, we always recommend having everything you need in your backpack and wearing waterproof trekking shoes.

The Val d’Aveto is very famous for its porcini mushrooms, which however can only be harvested if you have a special card and respect the regulations in force.

Description

We chose to venture into Val d'Aveto starting the route from malga Vallepiana, it is also possible to start from malga Zanoni: the two paths are practically parallel.

After parking the car, stay on the road that leads to an abandoned quarry. This is the point where you have to pay a little more attention because you cross the mountain pastures, usually manned by shepherd dogs.

Once you arrive at the quarry, take the path on the right, with the meadows giving way to a splendid pine forest.

From the pine forest you reach the Scaletta pass, after which you continue to the left, where you enter a forest.

Here the autumn colors are so full of nuances that you will often stop and photograph the undergrowth covered in carpets of leaves, sometimes dotted with mushrooms.

The path crosses a wonderful beech forest that leads to the Porciletti pass, from which you follow the signs for the Aiona refuge.

After crossing the silent forest, we arrived at the refuge, which fortunately was still open. Given the harsh autumn weather we went inside and warmed up a bit in front of the fireplace, enjoying a tasty slice of cake.

Once refreshed and warmed up, we set off again. We crossed the Pratomollo area which, being a peat bog, has a name that fits perfectly.

From here we descended until we crossed the circular route of malga Zanoni and Vallepiana, and finally we returned to the path taken on the outward journey.
